Review The Tenant of Wildfell Hall - Anne Brontë

The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is the second and the last novel by Anne Brontë. The novel published in 1848 under pseudonym, Acton Bell. Many elements of the novel follow her experience as a governess. The Theme of this book is Love and Marriage, also Anne Brontë raised the alcholicsm issue and it's effect on the household.

This novel follows the story of Gilbert Markam, a twenty-four-year-old farmer, in love with a mysterious widow, the new resident of Wildfell Hall, Helen Graham. She only live with her little son and a housekeeper. Her appearance arouses great interest among the neighbours of the nearby village. They visit her one by one, but the stranger, who introduces herself as Mrs. Graham, is very welcoming.

Later Gilbert and Rose Markham visited Wildfell Hall, they were captivated by Helen's studio and so many paintings. Arthur, her son said that her Mother sell all the pictures to London and somebody sends them money for living. Her strict seclusion soon gives rise to gossip in the neighbouring village and she becomes a social outcast, in fact that Helen is more like to be alone and exile.

"I am not sure the loneliness of the place was not one of its chief recommendations - I take pleasure in watching people pass the windows; and I like to be quiet."  (Helen)

Helen is a contradictive character, In just a short while, his presence has already caused controversy. The villagers started baseless rumors about the relationship between Helen and Mr. Lawrence, who rented Wildfell Hall. We know that the villagers is like to judging, and talking rumors.

Helen's out-of-the-box thinking is different from the women in the village, but makes Gilbert love Helen even more. Gilbert tends to like women who are smart and agree with him. However, the news of the scandal still really affected Gilbert, who was basically very moody and jealous. He is jealous of Mr. Lawrence so he did what he shouldn't have done to Mr. Lawrence. Everything about Helen made Gilbert curious, he wanted to follow up on his relationship with her, what kind of relationship she had with Mr. Lawrence? who is the father of her child? and he wants to know more. Then Helen gave him her diary, everything Gilbert wanted to know was in it.

I love how Anne Brontë describes Helen Graham's thoughts about marriage and parenting, also making Helen make her own independent life is somehow contrary to the early 19^th century norms, she pursues an artist's career and makes an income by selling her pictures. In second part of the book, in her diary we will meet the crucial of Helen's previous life.

“If you would have your son to walk honorably through the world, you must not attempt to clear the stones from his path, but teach him to walk firmly over them - not insist upon leading him by the hand, but let him learn to go alone.” (Helen)

and about marriage:

".... When I tell you not to marry without love, I do not advise you to marry for love alone – there are many, many other things to be considered. Keep both heart and hand in your own possession, till you see good reason to part with them; and if such an occasion should never present itself, comfort your mind with this reflection: that, though in single life your joys may not be very many, your sorrows, at least will not be more than you can bear. Marriage may change your circumstances for the better, but in myprivate opinion, it is far more likely to produce a contrary result" (Helen)

I love how little Arthur as the connector of the relationship between Helen and Gilbert. I really admire little Arthur !! Well, this is the result from a child who was educated by his mother well. Helen really made a wise decision to keep her children away from the bad influence of their father, who was an alcoholic and hedonist.

"Dear Arthur! What did I not owe to you for this and every other happy meeting? - Through him, I was at once delivered from all fonnality, and terror, and constraint. In love affairs, there is no mediator like a merry, simple-hearted child - ever ready to cement divided hearts, to span the unfriendly gulf of custom, to melt the ice of cold reserve, and overthrow the separating walls of dread fonnality and pride." ( Gilbert )

At the very last, I love everything in this book, I would read a hundred novels of Anne Brontë if it's really exist. This book is my favorite, every line, every conversation is meaningfull.

Juliet Ashton, a writer who is promoting her new book, written under the pseudonym Izzy Bickerstaff. The book is a collection of humorous stories about life during World War II. However, Juliet still wanted to write according to her heart's desires,

In mid-January, Juliet, who lived in London, received a letter from Dawsey Adams, a foreigner from Guernsey. Dawsey knows Juliet's address from a book entitled Selected Essays of Elia by Charles Lamb which once belonged to Juliet, after a long journey the book fell into Dawsey's arms.

"I wonder how the book got to Guernsey? Perhaps there is some secret sort of homing instinct in books that brings them to their perfect readers. How delightful if that were true. "

Guernsey is an island in the Chanel archipelago on the border between England and France. Juliette is impressed that Adams is part of the literary book club The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. The correspondence between Juliet and Dawsey continues, Dawsey tells that The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is a book club that was accidentally created during the German occupation, but the club continues to this day even after the war is over. Juliet was immediately interested in their stories and experiences during the war, then she began corresponding with several island residents, they convinced Juliet to come visit Guernsey.

Each character and member of the Guernsey book club, has a dark background about World War II. In the difficult and tense war situation, The Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society book club meeting was a positive way for them to forget the meaning of war, loss and loneliness, so that they finally found simple happiness. With Juliet's arrival on the island of Guernsey, Juliet's enthusiasm for writing immediately increased and finally Juliet found writing material that truly suited her heart's desire.

This is the first time I have read an interactive epsitolary novel, although it does not have the normal chapter division, but the collection of letters is ordered chronologically based on the date of the letter and told through various correspondence between characters. At first it was a bit confusing because there were too many points of view, but over time you got used to it because each character had a unique writing characteristic. I read this book in the English version published by Bloomsbury.

Review Novel Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier

"Last night I dreamed I went to Manderley again. It seemed to me I stood by the iron gate leading to the drive, and for a while I could not enter, for the way was barred to me."

That is the famous first line of Rebecca, book by Daphne Du Maurier that was released in 1938. I've never read a book by Du Maurier before, and I've never read a book with an unidentified heroine. first a little grating, but I believe the author's has a motive in it. We already knew how the ending in chapter 1, but as soon as we start reading chapter 2, we will start to understand what is happening.

"We can never go back again, that much is certain. The past is still too close to us."

The Unnamed, or the narrator, is a young orphan girl who works as Mrs. Van Hopper's companion while she is on vacation in Monte Carlo. A wealthy Englishman named Maxim de Winter, a widower in his forties, strikes up a friendship with the unnamed narrator, a gullible young woman in her early twenties. She decides to marry him after a fortnight of romance, and after the nuptials and honeymoon, she travels with him to his mansion in Cornwall, the lovely estate Manderley. The narrator later become The New Mrs. De Winter and the mistress of Manderley. 

"We came to Manderley in early May, arriving, so Maxim said, with the first swallows and the bluebells. It would be the best moment, before the full flush of summer, and in the valley the azaleas would be prodigal of scent, and the bloodred rhododendrons in bloom."

There is an evil housekeeper in Manderley named Mrs. Danvers. She didn't like The New Mrs. De Winter, because she devoted to the late Mrs. Rebecca De Winter who died in accident last year.  She makes repeated psychological attempts to undermine the narrator, implying quietly that she will never match Rebecca's charm, beauty, and sophistication. When these things are made, the narrator becomes envious.

Review dan Ulasan Novel Down And Out in Paris and London karya George Orwell

"Daerah kumuh Paris memang tempat berkumpul orang-orang eksentrik- orang - orang yang jatuh ke jalur kehidupan yang ter-kucilkan, setengah gila dan tidak lagi mencoba menjadi manusia normal atau wajar. Kemiskinan membebaskan mereka dari tata cara kelakuan biasa, seperti kekayaan membebaskan orang untuk tidak bekerja." 

Buku ini mengajak kita menyelami kemiskinan di tempat yang paling kumuh di Kota Paris dan London.  Buku ini ber-genre realisme-satire atau  lebih tepatnya sosial eksperimen dan filosofi kehidupan melarat. Masih belum bisa dibuktikan kalau buku ini sebagai autobiografi George Orwell. Tapi beberapa events atau kejadian dari buku ini nyata pengalaman Orwell dan dikemas dalam bentuk fiksi. Novel ini menggunakan sudut pandang orang pertama, yaitu sudut pandang penulis itu sendiri, karena tokoh aku di sini tidak diketahui namanya, yang kemudian oleh pembaca disebut sebagai George Orwell.

Realita kehidupan miskin di kedua kota besar Paris dan London tidak berbeda jauh.  Hidup miskin tidak jauh dari kelaparan, kotor dan tidak punya tempat tinggal. Tidak ada lagi yang dipikirkan selain makan untuk hari ini dan tempat tidur untuk malam yang dingin. Tidak memikirkan esok pakai baju apa dan akan pergi kemana. Sebenarnya, saya sudah sering baca novel Emile Zola, kondisi kemelaratan di Paris pada abad 19 sampai abad 20 sudah tidak terlalu asing lagi. Kalau Zola lebih mendramatisir kemiskinan, Justru Orwell menyuguhkan kemiskinan dalam diselingi dengan humor, dan cara-cara menyelesaikan masalah orang miskin yang dibilang cerdik.

Review dan Ulasan Novel Mathilda - Mary Shelley

Warning !!

This novel contains: incest, in love with death and commit suicide, but, I proudly appreciate, 4 stars for Mary whose birthday in late August 30th.

Mathilda, kehilangan ibunya tak lama setelah kelahirannya, tumbuh di bawah perlindungan bibinya sampai usia 16 tahun. Sama seperti ibunya, dia adalah gadis yang cerdas, naif dan cantik. Ayahnya telah berkelana dan mengasingkan diri selama 16 tahun demi menghilangkan rasa sakit dan kesedihan kehilangan istrinya. Setlah kematian bibinya, Mathilda dan Ayahnya hidup bersama setelah 16 tahun tidak pernah berjumpa. Kecantikan Mathilda mulai terpancar setlah ia berusia 16 tahun, kecantikan seperti mendiang ibunya, Diana.

Ketika Mathilda mengetahui tentang cinta ayahnya untuknya merupakan hasrat yang lain bukan sebagai ayah dan anak, kehidupan Mathilda pun tidak akan sama seperti sebelumnya. Setelah kematian ayahnya, Mathilda mengasingkan diri dan hidup sebagai orang yang anti-sosial. Kemudian Mathilda dipertemukan dengan Woodville, ia prihatin akan keadaan Mathilda, dan berusaha untuk menolongnya. 

In the end .... Woodville bukanlah Kesatria dengan baju baja berkilauan, dan Mathilda tidak hidup bersama dengan Woodville sampai akhir hayatnya. Karena novel ini bukan Roman picisan tapi Gothic romance yang sudah kusangka tak akan berakhir bahagia. 

Gaya bercerita Mary sungguh sangaat baguuuus.. this is masterpiece. Walaupun plotnya simpel, tapi Mary tidak pernah kehabisan metafora dan rangkaian kata yang sangat puitis.

Di bawah ini merupakan kutipan-kutipan yang aku suka, sesaat sebelum Mathilda bertemu dengan kematian :

"Sejujurnya, aku jatuh cinta terhadap kematian; kesenangan seorang gadis yang memandangi gaun pengantinya masih kalah dibandingankan aku yang suka membayangkan tubuhku tubuhku telah diselimuti kain kafan: bukankah itulah gaun pernikahanku? Hanya dengan cara itu aku akan bertemu dengan ayahku di tempat batin rohani kami bisa bersatu abadi dan tidak akan terpisahkan selamanya"

"Kau berpaling dariku; tetapi, sebelum kau menolakku, bayangkanlah, Woodville, betapa indahnya andaikan kita bisa menyingkirkan beban air mata dan kesengsaraan yang kita derita saat ini; dan tentu saja kita akan menemukan cahaya setelah kita melewati lembah gelap. Minuman itu akan membawa kita terjun ke dalam tidur yang panjang yang indah, dan ketika bangun kita akan berbahagia karena kesedihan dan ketakutan kita telah usai." 

PS: Ada beberapa kesamaan dari dari novel ini dengan kisah hidup Mary Shelley sendiri. Ibu Mathilda dan Mary sama-sama meninggal pada saat melahirkan mereka, hingga kedekatan Mary dengan ayahnya pun menjadi sorotan bahwa novel ini merupakan semi-autobiografinya.

Review dan ulasan sastra klasik Northanger Abbey karya Jane Austen

Northanger Abbey merupakan novel pertama yang ditulis Austen pada tahun 1803, dan diterbitkan pada tahun 1817 setelah kematianya. Novel ini sekaligus novel terakhir yang aku baca dari keseluruhan novel Austen.

Catherine Morland, adalah gadis 17 tahun yang biasa-biasa saja, tidak pintar, tidak mempunyai keahlian khusus yang sungguh tidak cocok untuk menjadi peran utama wanita (heroine).

Catherine bersahabat dengan Isabella selama Bath, Isabella adalah kekasih kakak lelaki Catherine, yang merupakan teman yang suka mengatur dan membosankan. Isabella menjadi dekat dengan Catherine karena sudah dianggap seperti adik ipar. Di Pump-room, Cathrine bertemu dengan Henry Tilney yang menarik perhatianya. Tanpa diduga, Adik Isabella, John Thrope juga menyukai Catherine. Namun, pertemuan dengan Henry lah yang membuat Catherine penasaran, hingga ia berusaha mendekati adik Henry, Eleanor.

Suasana novel ini berubah jadi sedikit horor Setelah Catherine diundang untuk menjadi tamu di kediaman Tilney, sebuah rumah bergaya gothic, bekas biara yang bernama Northanger Abbey. Tapi, setelah itu saya dikejutkan, novel ini banting stir menjadi komedi.

Kesan horor dalam buku ini tidak lain hanyalah imajinasi Catherine Morland yang berlebihan karena sangat menyukai novel gothic romance. Selama ia menjadi tamu di Northanger Abbey, seakan-akan ia menjalani kisah gothic-romance-nya sendiri. 

Lucu sih, dengan kepolosan dan maaf banyak review yang berpendapat bahwa Catherine itu bodoh. Menurutku, Catherine seperti gadis kampung yang baru main ke kota, yang belum beradaptasi dengan kehidupan sosial kelas atas. Novel ini tidak akan selucu itu apabila Catherine tidak selugu itu. Justru menariknya, novel ini pelan-pelan membuka pandangan Catherine terhadap "dunia luar".

Khas novel Austen, pada akhir cerita ada plot twist yang membuat kita menebak-nebak siapakah yang akhirnya bersama dengan tokoh utama cerita ini, dan juga kisah akhir beberapa tokoh lainya. Ada beberapa percakapan dalam novel ini yang bisa dibilang berkualitas, banyak sekali kritik-kritik sosial mengenai novel-novel terdahulu seperti novel-novel gotik karya Ann Radcliff.

Ada beberapa kutipan yang aku ambil dari novel ini:

"Oh! Aku suka sekali dengan buku ini! Aku akan menghabiskan waktuku untuk membacanya. Percayalah, kalau tidak harus bertemu denganmu, aku tidak akan berhenti membacanya.” (Catherine)

"Kita ini orang Inggris, kita ini orang Kristen. Periksa kembali pemahamanmu sendiri, akal sehatmu akan apa yang mungkin, pengamatanmu terhadap apa yang terjadi di sekitarmu. Apakah pendidikan yang kita terima mempersiapkan kita untuk menghadapi kekejaman seperti ini? Apakah hukum kita mengabaikan hal semacam itu? Dapatkah hal-hal itu dilakukan tanpa diketahui, di negara seperti ini, di mana hubungan sosialnya memiliki pijakan yang kuat, di mana setiap warganya dikelilingi oleh suatu lingkungan yang penuh dengan mata-mata sukarela, dan di mana jalan-jalan dan surat kabar bersifat terbuka? Miss Morland yang baik, apa yang selama ini kau pikirkan?” (Henry Tilney )

Sungguh bacaan yang cukup menghibur, dan aku jadi ketagihan baca gothic romance classics. Novel Northanger Abbey merupakan novel yang menjelaskan tentang novel dan membuat aku ingin membaca novel Ann Radcliff.

Review Novel Pachinko, karya Min Jin Lee

"Sejarah mengecewakan kita, tapi biarlah"

      
Kutipan tersebut merupakan kalimat awal bab pertama, sekaligus kata pembukaan buku ini yang mencerminkan keseluruhan cerita. Buku ini menceritakan tentang  diaspora 4 generasi etnis Korea, yang lahir, besar dan tingggal di Jepang sebagai kaum  minoritas. 

Generasi pertama dimulai dengan Kim Hoonie menikahi Yang Jin, dan melahirkan anak bernama Sunja. Mereka mengelola pemondokan di sebuah desa nelayan di Yeongdo, Busan, Korea  pada awal abad ke 20, saat pemerintahan Jepang berkuasa menduduki Korea. Sunja anak satu-satunya mereka setelah Yangjin empat kali keguguran. Sunja sangat dekat dengan ayahnya, namun takdir berkata lain, Hoonie mati muda akibat radang paru-paru. 

Pada awal musim panas, Juni 1932 seorang pastor muda, Baek Isak tiba di pemondokan dan jatuh sakit, Sunja hamil di luar nikah dan jatuh cinta dengan makelar ikan baru bernama, Koh Hansu yang sudah memiliki istri dan tiga putri yang tinggal di Osaka, Jepang. Sebagai balas budi atas pertolongan Yangjin  bersedia merawat Isak semasa sakit dan demi harga diri gadis itu, Pastor Isak bersedia menolong Sunja dengan menikahinya dan membawanya ke Osaka untuk tinggal bersama kaka kandungnya, Baek Yoseb dan istrinya, Kyung Hee. 

Review The Scarlet Letter - Nathaniel Hawthrone

"Simbol itu bukanlah sekedar kain merah yang dicelupkan ke dalam bejana duniawi, tapi merupakan kain merah membara dengan api neraka, dan dapat terlihat menyala-nyala kemana pun Hester Prynne berjalan keluar rumahnya di malam hari"

    Di kota Boston yang masih banyak dihuni kaum Puritan di tahun 1642, seorang perempuan muda bernama Hester Prynne melahirkan seorang bayi bernama Pearl tanpa diketahui siapa ayahnya, sebab suami Hester dipercaya telah mati di laut sebelum ia hamil. Ia dihukum untuk memakai huruf 'A' berwarna merah tua di dadanya sepanjang sisa hidupnya. Huruf A tersebut mempunyai arti "adultery". Ditengah -tengah kerumunan saat Hester berdiri di panggung penghakiman, ia melihat suaminya di tengah kerumunan. Suaminya tersebut mengaku sebagai dokter yang bernama Roger Chillingworth, namun ia tidak mengakui bahwa ia adalah suami Hester. Dalam penjara Hester, suaminya membuat kesepakatan untuk merahasiakan kenyataan bahwa Chillingworth adalah Mr. Prynne, suaminya.

Ada seorang pendeta gereja yang sangat terkemuka di masayrakat New England, yaitu Arthur Dimmesdale. Sampai pada pertengahan buku ini, kita akan mendapatkan beberapa petunjuk bahwa Arthur Dimesdale lah ayah dari anak Hester. Kemudian Roger Chillingworth mencurigai Arthur Dimmesdale yang terlihat alim, maka ia tinggal bersama pastor itu untuk mencoba mendapatkan pengakuanya.

Review Agatha Christie - Halloween Party

Ariadne Oliver, attending the Halloween party while visiting her friend Judith Butle. The party held at Rowena Drake's home in Woodleigh Common. For Ariadne, this is going to be horrible party ever, because there was the murder happened. The victim named Joyce, thirteen-year-old tells everyone attending she had once seen a murder, but had not realised it was one until later. When the party ends, Joyce is found dead, having been drowned in an apple-bobbing tub. Immediately, Ariadne called out to her friend, the famous detective, Hercule Poirot to investigate the murder and Joyce's claim.

‘We go from the past to the future,’ said Poirot. 

So, Poirot had to investigate a case in the past that might not even have happened, and was just a teenage braggart. As many Woodleigh Commons say, Joyce was a kid who wanted attention, and wanted to look cool in the eyes of Ariadne Oliver, the mystery writer.  with the help of his friend, from retired Superintendent Spence, Poirot begins to investigate cases that occurred in the past,  in which at this time it was most likely that the perpetrators had not yet been brought to justice or were found innocent when tried.

Review The Incredible Journey - Sheila Burnford

Hanya dengan mengandalkan insting, Luath, seeorkor labrador retriver, Bodger, seekor bull terrier tua, dan Tao, seekor kucing siam bermata biru cantik - pergi melakukan perjalanan luar biasa ke barat menuju rumahnya. Mereka melakukan perjalanan 300 mil jauhnya melalui hutan belantara Kanada untuk bertemu tuannya, keluarga Hunters. Karena Keluarga Hunters sedang bepergian ke London, peliharan mereka dititipkan kepada kerabatnya John Longride.

Sungguh perjalanan yang luar biasa bagi mereka yang sebelumnya merupakan anjing dan kucing rumahan. Namun berkat kecerdikan Tao, keberanian Luath dan ke-kaleman Bodger, mereka pun berhasil melakukan perjalananya sampai ke rumah.
